The Senate on Wednesday expressed readiness to consider
President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as
substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,
after months of delay.
The Presidency had sought the Senate’s request since July through a
letter signed by Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo in his capacity as the
acting President when Mr. Buhari was away on a medical trip.
However, since the letter was read by Senate President Bukola Saraki
on July 14, the Senate had not shown readiness to treat the request,
fuelling allegations some of the Senators were working in cahoot with
some persons in the Executive to block Mr. Magu’s confirmation.
But on Wednesday, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who chaired
the plenary, announced that the confirmation hearing of Mr. Magu would
hold tomorrow, Thursday,
The hearing will be held by the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption chaired by Chukwuka Utazi, PDP-Enugu.
Mr. Utazi later told PREMIUM TIMES the hearing will hold in the
morning. He, however, did not comment when asked what caused the long
delay in the first place.
Mr. Buhari appointed Mr. Magu acting chair of the EFCC after the removal of Ibrahim Lamorde on November 9, 2015.
Mr. Magu, if confirmed by the Senate, will be the fourth head of the
Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, after Nuhu Ribadu, Farida Waziri and Mr.
Lamorde.
Before his appointment as acting Chairman, Mr. Magu had served as head of the Economic Governance Unit of the commission.
In that capacity, he oversaw investigation of a number of Nigeria’s Senators, including Mr. Saraki, over corruption allegations.
